Thapar B.Tech fee structure 2026-27: semester-wise official table
Thapar Institute of Engineering and Technology (TIET), Patiala is a private deemed university, so its fee schedule is published directly by the institute, not by a state fee authority. The 2026-27 "Tuition Fee and Other Dues" PDF splits B.E./B.Tech branches into three fee groups. Every group pays the same one-time admission fee of ₹30,000, but tuition and total semester dues differ, which is why "Thapar fees" has three correct answers rather than one.
📌 In one line: CSE-group ₹3,25,000/semester · ECE-group ₹2,94,800/semester · other B.E. branches ₹2,48,600/semester · one-time admission fee ₹30,000.
📌 In one line: fee structure — confirm the current-year official circular before payment.
| B.Tech fee group (2026-27) | Tuition / semester | Total / semester | Per year (2 semesters) | First payment (sem 1 + ₹30,000 admission) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Group 1: DSAI, COE (CSE), CSBS, ENC | ₹2,57,000 | ₹3,25,000 | ₹6,50,000 | ₹3,55,000 |
| Group 2: BT, ECE, EEC, EVD, RAI | ₹2,26,800 | ₹2,94,800 | ₹5,89,600 | ₹3,24,800 |
| Group 3: all other B.E. branches | ₹1,82,600 | ₹2,48,600 | ₹4,97,200 | ₹2,78,600 |
| Admission fee (all groups) | One time, at admission | ₹30,000 | ||

Reading the table: "tuition" is the teaching fee alone; the total per semester adds the other dues itemised in the PDF (the balance works out to ₹68,000 per semester for Groups 1 and 2, and ₹66,000 for Group 3). The per-year figure is simply two semesters, since TIET bills each semester separately. So the widely searched "Thapar CSE fee" is ₹6,50,000 per year in academic dues, not per semester, and the popular shorthand "₹6.5L/yr" applies only to the CSE group, not to ECE or the core branches.
What you actually pay on day one at Thapar
The first payment is the number families most often get wrong. It is not the yearly fee: TIET collects the first semester's total dues plus the one-time ₹30,000 admission fee when you accept a seat during its JEE-Main-score-based online counselling. That means ₹3,55,000 for a DSAI/COE (CSE)/CSBS/ENC seat, ₹3,24,800 for BT/ECE/EEC/EVD/RAI, and ₹2,78,600 for any other B.E. branch. From the second semester onwards you pay only the plain semester amount for your group — ₹3,25,000, ₹2,94,800 or ₹2,48,600 — at the start of each semester.
If you are budgeting an education loan, sanction it against the official PDF schedule rather than a portal estimate: banks generally release semester-wise disbursements, which matches TIET's billing cycle exactly. Keep the first-payment amount liquid before your counselling round, because seat acceptance windows are short and losing a window can mean losing the allotted branch.
Thapar B.Tech fees for 4 years: complete totals
📌 In one line: 8 semesters cost ₹26,00,000 (CSE group) / ₹23,58,400 (ECE group) / ₹19,88,800 (others), plus ₹30,000 one-time — before hostel and mess.
📌 In one line: fee structure — confirm the current-year official circular before payment.
| B.Tech fee group | Per year | 8-semester academic total | + one-time admission fee | Grand academic total (4 years) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Group 1: DSAI, COE (CSE), CSBS, ENC | ₹6,50,000 | ₹26,00,000 | ₹30,000 | ₹26,30,000 |
| Group 2: BT, ECE, EEC, EVD, RAI | ₹5,89,600 | ₹23,58,400 | ₹30,000 | ₹23,88,400 |
| Group 3: all other B.E. branches | ₹4,97,200 | ₹19,88,800 | ₹30,000 | ₹20,18,800 |
Totals are derived arithmetically from the semester amounts in the official TIET "Tuition Fee and Other Dues for 2026-27" PDF (8 semesters × total semester fee + ₹30,000 one-time). TIET can revise dues in later academic years, so treat the 4-year figure as a planning number at 2026-27 rates.
Two cautions on the totals. First, they are academic dues only — hostel, mess and personal expenses sit on top (covered below). Second, they assume the 2026-27 rates hold for all four years, which historically is not guaranteed; TIET publishes a fresh dues PDF each year. For the NRI category, the fee is listed separately in USD (USD 6,500 per year, USD 26,000 across four years on the current schedule) — confirm the current USD structure with TIET admissions (thapar.edu) before remitting.
Thapar M.E. / M.Tech fees 2026-27
📌 In one line: M.Tech under CSED/ECED/MED/EIED costs ₹99,700 per semester (₹3,98,800 programme); other departments ₹89,500 per semester (₹3,58,000 programme).

| M.E./M.Tech departments (2026-27) | Tuition / semester | Total / semester | First payment (sem 1 + ₹30,000 admission) | Programme total (4 semesters) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| CSED, ECED, MED, EIED | ₹70,700 | ₹99,700 | ₹1,29,700 | ₹3,98,800 |
| All other departments | ₹60,500 | ₹89,500 | ₹1,19,500 | ₹3,58,000 |

The postgraduate structure mirrors the undergraduate one: the same ₹30,000 one-time admission fee applies, first payment is the first semester's dues plus that admission fee, and billing is semester-wise across the two-year programme. At roughly ₹4 lakh all-in for the computer science and electronics side, TIET's M.Tech is a fraction of its B.Tech cost — a point worth noting for GATE-route students comparing it against self-financed M.Tech seats elsewhere.
Hostel and mess: what the academic fee does not cover
📌 In one line: Patiala hostel ₹34,600-₹78,500/semester by room type + mess ₹26,900/semester; Dera Bassi hostel ₹30,000-₹55,000 + mess ₹26,300.
📌 In one line: fee structure — confirm the current-year official circular before payment.
| Campus | Hostel / semester | Mess / semester |
|---|---|---|
| Patiala (main campus) | ₹34,600 – ₹78,500 (by room type) | ₹26,900 |
| Dera Bassi campus | ₹30,000 – ₹55,000 (by room type) | ₹26,300 |

Adding boarding to a CSE-group seat at Patiala, a hosteller's realistic per-semester outgo is ₹3,25,000 + ₹34,600–₹78,500 + ₹26,900, i.e. roughly ₹3.87–₹4.30 lakh per semester depending on room type. Over four years that pushes the true cost of a Thapar CSE hostel seat towards ₹31–₹34.7 lakh at current rates — the number a loan application should actually be built on, rather than the bare ₹26 lakh academic total.
How and when Thapar fees are paid
TIET is a private deemed university and fills B.E. seats through its own JEE-Main-score-based online counselling on thapar.edu — it is not part of JoSAA/CSAB, so do not wait for those platforms to show Thapar seats. The payment rhythm is: (1) registration/counselling fee at application, per the admission notification; (2) the first payment — first semester dues + ₹30,000 admission fee — within the seat-acceptance window of your allotment round; (3) plain semester dues at the start of every subsequent semester. Amounts are exactly the group-wise figures in the tables above.
Three practical rules keep families out of trouble. Pay only through the official TIET payment channel linked from thapar.edu and keep every receipt; no agent can "block" a Thapar seat for cash, because there is no paid management-quota route at TIET (see the Thapar management quota page for the full debunk). Check the withdrawal and refund schedule for your round in the current admission notification — refund cut-offs are date-based, so confirm the applicable slab with TIET admissions (thapar.edu) before withdrawing. And if your branch might upgrade in a later round within the same fee group, the amount already paid simply carries over; only a group change (say, Group 3 to Group 1) creates a payable difference.
Scholarships that directly cut the Thapar fee
The fee tables above are list prices; TIET's Scholarship Policy (2026-27) can reduce them substantially for high scorers. MS-I waives tuition plus development fee for the first 50 admitted students by JEE Main AIR who also have 95% or more in 10+2. MS-II waives tuition for the next 60 by JEE AIR with 90%+ in 10+2. MS-III gives a 50% tuition waiver to the first 10% of admitted students in each discipline by JEE AIR with 85%+ in 10+2. A separate merit-cum-means award (family income up to ₹10 lakh, selected cases) waives tuition plus development fee, and lateral-entry diploma students can earn a 25–50% tuition waiver based on diploma marks. On a CSE-group seat, an MS-II tuition waiver alone removes ₹2,57,000 of the ₹3,25,000 semester bill.

Is the fee worth it? Cutoff and placement context
A ₹26.3 lakh four-year CSE bill only makes sense against what it buys. Entry is genuinely competitive: in TIET 2025 Round 2, CSE/COPC closed at AIR 33,379 for Outside Punjab (GENO) and AIR 31,743 for Punjab (GENP); in the 2026 Round 2 list, CSE/COPC closed at AIR 39,265 / 97.53 percentile for GENO and AIR 59,508 / 96.22 percentile for GENP (official TIET second-online-counselling cutoff PDFs, thapar.edu). Every seat is JEE-Main-merit through TIET's own counselling, so the peer group is uniformly exam-qualified — one reason recruiters treat TIET like a mid-NIT. Round-wise, branch-wise numbers with quota labels are on the Thapar cutoff page, and salary outcomes on the Thapar placements page.
For everything beyond fees — branches, campus, admission timeline and how the counselling rounds run — start from the Thapar University admission guide. If you are comparing costs across colleges, remember the comparison is only fair semester-to-semester: Thapar bills twice a year, while many private universities quote annual figures that quietly exclude dues the TIET PDF includes.
