The wide hostel range at Patiala reflects the room categories listed in the official dues document — the per-semester amount depends on the room type you are allotted, and the lowest slabs are typically the most economical shared options while the top slabs are the premium categories. The official PDF is the only document that maps each room type to its exact amount, so before you lock your budget, confirm the room-wise slab with TIET admissions (thapar.edu). Mess dues at Patiala are a flat ₹26,900 per semester and do not vary by room type.
Thapar Dera Bassi hostel and mess fees 2026-27 (official)
📌 In one line: Dera Bassi hostel ₹30,000–55,000/semester by room type + mess ₹26,300/semester = ₹1,12,600–1,62,600 per year for boarding and food.

Dera Bassi is TIET’s second campus, and its hostel slabs sit below Patiala at both ends of the range. Which programmes and batches are seated at Dera Bassi in a given year, and whether you can choose between campuses, is an allocation decision made by the institute — confirm your campus and hostel options with TIET admissions (thapar.edu) at the time of counselling rather than assuming a campus from a third-party listing.
Patiala vs Dera Bassi: hostel cost difference per year
Comparing the two campuses on the official heads: at the most economical room slab, a Dera Bassi resident pays about ₹10,400 less per year than a Patiala resident (₹1,12,600 vs ₹1,23,000 hostel + mess), and at the top slab the gap widens to about ₹48,200 per year (₹1,62,600 vs ₹2,10,800) — FindUrCollege arithmetic on official heads. Mess dues are nearly identical (₹26,300 vs ₹26,900 per semester), so almost all of the difference comes from the hostel room slabs. Remember that campus allotment is not a free consumer choice in most cases, so treat this as budgeting information, not a selection lever.
Yearly total budget: academic fee + hostel + mess
📌 In one line: add the official academic fee per year to the Patiala hostel + mess range — CSE group lands at roughly ₹7.73L–8.61L per year before the one-time ₹30,000 admission fee.
📌 In one line: fee structure — confirm the current-year official circular before payment.
| Branch group (B.E./B.Tech) | Academic fee / year (official) | Patiala hostel + mess / year (arithmetic) | Yearly total (FindUrCollege arithmetic) |
|---|---|---|---|
| DSAI, COE (CSE), CSBS, ENC | ₹6,50,000 | ₹1,23,000 – ₹2,10,800 | ₹7,73,000 – ₹8,60,800 |
| BT, ECE, EEC, EVD, RAI | ₹5,89,600 | ₹1,23,000 – ₹2,10,800 | ₹7,12,600 – ₹8,00,400 |
| Other B.E. branches | ₹4,97,200 | ₹1,23,000 – ₹2,10,800 | ₹6,20,200 – ₹7,08,000 |
Sources: academic fee per year and the one-time ₹30,000 admission fee are from the official TIET “Tuition Fee and Other Dues for 2026-27” PDF (thapar.edu); hostel + mess is the Patiala range from the same PDF. The yearly-total column is FindUrCollege arithmetic on these official heads — it is not a figure printed by TIET.
Two first-year notes. First, add the one-time admission fee of ₹30,000 to whichever row applies to you — the official PDF’s “first payment” figures (₹3,55,000 for the CSE group, ₹3,24,800 for the ECE group, ₹2,78,600 for other branches) already include it on top of the first semester’s academic fee. Second, hostel and mess are billed as separate per-semester heads, so the exact payment calendar (whether hostel dues are collected with the semester fee or at hostel registration) should be confirmed with TIET admissions (thapar.edu). For the full academic fee breakup by branch group, see the dedicated Thapar fees 2026-27 page.
Four-year hostel and mess budget (8 semesters)
📌 In one line: across 8 semesters, plan ₹4.92L–8.43L for hostel + mess at Patiala and ₹4.50L–6.50L at Dera Bassi, on top of tuition.
📌 In one line: hostel & mess charges — confirm current-year rates with the institute.
| Item | Patiala (FindUrCollege arithmetic) | Dera Bassi (FindUrCollege arithmetic) |
|---|---|---|
| Hostel + mess, 4 years (8 semesters) | ₹4,92,000 – ₹8,43,200 | ₹4,50,400 – ₹6,50,400 |
| Full 4-year budget, CSE group (academic ₹26,00,000 + ₹30,000 one-time + hostel/mess) | ₹31,22,000 – ₹34,73,200 | ₹30,80,400 – ₹32,80,400 |
| Full 4-year budget, ECE group (academic ₹23,58,400 + ₹30,000 + hostel/mess) | ₹28,80,400 – ₹32,31,600 | ₹28,38,800 – ₹30,38,800 |
| Full 4-year budget, other B.E. branches (academic ₹19,88,800 + ₹30,000 + hostel/mess) | ₹25,10,800 – ₹28,62,000 | ₹24,69,200 – ₹26,69,200 |
All per-semester heads (hostel, mess, tuition/semester fee, one-time admission fee) are from the official TIET 2026-27 fee PDF; every multi-year total above is FindUrCollege arithmetic on those official heads and assumes the 2026-27 rates stay flat. In practice hostel and mess dues can be revised year to year, so treat the four-year figures as planning estimates and re-check the current-year PDF each academic session.
What the hostel fee answer does and does not include
Keep three columns in your Thapar budget sheet. The first is the academic fee (tuition + other academic dues per semester), which is fixed by branch group. The second is hostel + mess from the tables above — this is what this page answers. The third is personal spend: laundry, canteen top-ups beyond the mess plan, travel between Patiala/Dera Bassi and home, and one-off purchases; that column is yours to estimate and no official head covers it. Any refundable deposits, hostel security amounts or category-specific extras that may apply at check-in are not enumerated in the summary heads we verified — confirm those with TIET admissions (thapar.edu) before paying.
One interaction students often miss: Thapar’s merit scholarships do not touch hostel or mess dues. Under the official 2026-27 scholarship policy, MS-I (first 50 admitted by JEE Main AIR with 10+2 ≥ 95%) waives tuition and development fee, MS-II (next 60, 10+2 ≥ 90%) waives tuition, MS-III (first 10% admitted per discipline, 10+2 ≥ 85%) waives 50% of tuition, and the merit-cum-means award (family income ≤ ₹10 lakh, selected cases) waives tuition and development fee. Every one of those waivers leaves the hostel and mess heads payable in full, so even a full MS-I scholar living at Patiala should budget ₹1,23,000–2,10,800 per year for boarding and food. Details and eligibility are on the Thapar scholarships page; for funding the balance, see our education loan guide.
How hostel allotment works at TIET (and the JoSAA myth)
TIET is a private deemed university, so B.E./B.Tech admission runs through Thapar’s own JEE-Main-based online counselling on the institute portal — it is not part of JoSAA or CSAB, and no JoSAA choice-filling list will ever show a Thapar hostel or seat. Once your seat is confirmed through TIET’s counselling and the first payment is made, hostel registration opens on the institute’s side; room categories are allotted from the available inventory, which is why applying early in the window matters if you want a specific room type at the lower slabs. The institute maintains separate hostels for boys and girls on the Patiala campus, and most first-year students opt to live on campus.
Practical sequencing for 2026 admits: keep the hostel + mess amount for your first semester liquid at the time of seat acceptance, because it lands close to the first academic payment. For the CSE group at Patiala that means planning for the ₹3,55,000 first payment (semester fee + one-time admission fee, official PDF) plus ₹61,500–1,05,400 of hostel + mess for the semester — roughly ₹4.17L–4.60L in the admission window (FindUrCollege arithmetic on official heads). If the cash-flow timing between the two payments matters to your family, confirm the exact due dates with TIET admissions (thapar.edu). How Thapar hostel costs compare in context
Because hostel and mess at Patiala total ₹1.23L–2.11L per year, boarding adds roughly 19–32% on top of the CSE-group academic fee of ₹6.5L per year — a materially bigger share for the lower-fee branch groups, where the same boarding cost is up to 42% of the ₹4.97L academic fee (FindUrCollege arithmetic on official heads). That is the number to use when comparing a hostel seat at Thapar against a college in your home city where boarding cost would be zero: the honest comparison is the yearly-total column above, not the tuition line alone. When comparing against other private universities, apply the same discipline — take each institute’s official hostel PDF rather than a portal estimate, keep room-type ranges as ranges, and never mix one college’s all-inclusive figure with another’s tuition-only figure. Our Thapar placements page covers the return side of the equation, and the Thapar cutoff page (official TIET round PDFs, with GENO/GENP quota labels) tells you whether the seat is realistic at your JEE Main rank in the first place.
