🧪 ICT Mumbai — the 30% All India rule almost every page gets wrong

📌 In one line: every ICT undergraduate seat goes through Maharashtra CAP — 70% state-level, 30% All India — and there is no institute-level or management seat at ICT at all.

• Status: a deemed university, autonomous, holding Elite Status and Centre of Excellence recognition from the Government of Maharashtra, at Matunga. It is not a government-aided college — the CET Cell labels ICT “Deemed University Autonomous”, and gives it its own row in the brochure, separate from the government and government-aided institutions. VJTI is the one labelled “Government-Aided Autonomous”.
• Seat rule: Maharashtra State Candidates 70% (State Level), All India Seats 30%, Institution Level Seats Nil, Minority Quota Nil. Note the 30%: it is double the 15% All-India share that applies at private unaided colleges, so a JEE Main candidate has appreciably more room at ICT than at DJ Sanghvi or Thadomal Shahani. Chemical Engineering, for example, is 75 seats — 52 Maharashtra, 23 All India.
• No back door. Across all eight undergraduate programmes — Chemical Engineering, Fibres and Textile Processing Technology, Dyestuff Technology, Pharmaceuticals Chemistry and Technology, Oils Oleochemicals and Surfactants Technology, Polymer Engineering and Technology, Food Engineering and Technology, Surface Coating Technology — the institute-seats column reads zero. And drop one assumption while you are here: ICT is a deemed university and it is inside CAP. Deemed or autonomous status does not by itself mean a college has a management quota.
• Where ICT actually ranks: India Rankings 2025 — Pharmacy 6th (score 74.77), Engineering 41st (57.96), University 40th, Overall 64th. Internationally, QS World University Rankings by Subject 2026 places it in the 251-300 band for Engineering – Chemical, which is 14th of the 18 Indian institutions ranked in that table. That is the honest picture: outstanding in Pharmacy, strong nationally in Engineering, mid-table among Indian entries globally. Its QS profile carries exactly one subject chart, so “globally ranked” describes Chemical Engineering and nothing else — Polymer, Dyestuff, Food and Surface Coating are not ranked as subjects by any global framework. • Placements: ICT publishes no average. Its NIRF median for the AY 2023-24 batch is ₹9,00,000, with 121 of 233 placed — 51.9%. The two years before were ₹8,00,000 each.
• Fees: there is no published ICT fee for 2026-27. ICT's own admission handbook says only “Fees — As per Government Regulations” with the total “To be Declared in Admission Notice”. The one hard figure it has published is in its AICTE mandatory disclosure: ₹88,350 (Open) and ₹73,350 (Reserved) per year for 2023-24, the same for the B.Chem.Engg. and all seven B.Techs. Treat that as the last known figure, not as this year's.
• Cutoffs, official GOPEN closing percentiles. 2026 CAP Round I: Chemical Engineering 99.63, Polymer Engineering and Technology 99.47, Food Engineering and Technology 99.88. The 2025 Round I figures were 99.47, 99.02 and 99.53. If you have seen 98.78 for ICT Chemical quoted anywhere, it is wrong and it is wrong in the dangerous direction — a candidate at 98.5 would think the branch was within reach when it is more than a full percentile away.
• What ICT does not run: no CSE, IT or AI branch in CAP. Its eight CAP programmes are all chemical-technology, and its flagship degree is a Bachelor of Chemical Engineering (B.Chem.Engg.), not a B.Tech. ICT alumni are strongly represented at Reliance, Tata Chemicals, Hindustan Unilever, BASF and in pharmaceutical R&D.

Retrieval note: ictmumbai.edu.in was behind a bot-verification wall and returned HTTP 403 to every request on 7 September 2026. We did not attempt to get around it. ICT's own handbook and AICTE disclosure were read from archived copies of ICT's own files, and everything else came from the CET Cell, NIRF and QS directly.

🏢 NMIMS Mukesh Patel (MPSTME) — the exam is NMIMS CET, and NPAT is a different test

📌 In one line: MPSTME is outside Maharashtra CAP entirely, and its B.Tech route is the NMIMS CET — which is not the same exam as NPAT.

This one is worth getting right because registering for the wrong test costs you the year, and almost every page that covers MPSTME writes the two names as if they were one. NMIMS runs a single undergraduate entrance examination split into four categories. B.Tech (4-year) and MBA Tech (5-year) sit under NMIMS CET. NPAT is the category for BBA, B.Com and B.Sc. Finance. MST covers the mathematics programmes and LAT covers law. “NMIMS-CET (NPAT)” is two different tests written as one.

• Entrance and dates: NMIMS CET. For the 2026 cycle, registration ran 28 January to 26 May 2026, the computer-based test 10 February to 31 May 2026, and the merit list in the first week of June — not December-January. On attempts, NMIMS writes: “Candidate can attempt maximum 2 RETAKES in any selected category i.e. (1st main test plus 2 retakes). The highest marks among the total attempts will be considered.” So three sittings, best score counts. As of September 2026 MPSTME's own site reads “Admissions Closed for 2026”; if you are reading this for 2027, registration opens in late January.
• Eligibility, in NMIMS's own words: “English as compulsory subject with science or vocational science, minimum 45% marks in Physics, Mathematics, Chemistry / Vocational subject for all campuses OR Candidates passing Diploma Engineering with Minimum 45% is eligible to apply.”
• Fees — and read NMIMS's own caveat before you budget. There is no published 2026-27 MPSTME fee. The table people quote is labelled by NMIMS itself: “The fees mentioned are for the 2025 batch (last year) and are for reference purposes only. Fees for the 2026 batch will be communicated at the time of admission.” Those 2025-batch reference figures for the Mumbai campus, per annum, run wider than the range usually quoted: Civil and Mechanical ₹3,75,000; E&TC and Mechatronics ₹4,50,000; AI, Computer Engineering, CSBS, Data Science, IT and both CSE tracks ₹5,00,000; MBA Tech ₹5,50,000.
• There is no management quota, and NMIMS says so itself, in bold, on its own admissions site: “SVKM's NMIMS Deemed-to-be University DOES NOT have any management quota for admissions. The University DOES NOT authorise any third-party agency or individual to represent NMIMS for direct admissions... Any information circulating on social media... claiming direct admissions to NMIMS is FALSE and FAKE.”
• Where JEE Main fits: only inside a residual round. NMIMS's own document is titled “Non-NMIMS-CET admissions: For Vacant Seats only” and states that a non-CET candidate “will be considered only if vacant seats are available after NMIMS-CET merit listed candidates”, with CUET, JEE Main and state CET qualifiers “given preference in admission counselling process”. So JEE Main is a preference inside a leftover-seat round, not a route.
• Outside CAP means outside the FRA too. As a deemed-to-be university NMIMS sits outside the Fees Regulating Authority, so no FRA-approved fee and no three-times ceiling applies to it. It sets and publishes its own fee.
• Specialisations: CSE, AI & ML, Data Science, Mechatronics, Civil & Structural Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Electronics & Telecommunications, Computer Science with Cyber-Security.
• Integrated B.Tech + MBA option: Highly valued in the corporate sector for management-track engineering careers.
• Campus: Vile Parle (West), integrated with the NMIMS deemed-university hub.

🏠 Navi Mumbai Tech Corridor — Vashi, Nerul, Belapur, Panvel

Don't overlook Navi Mumbai. Colleges like DY Patil Nerul, SIES Nerul, Father Agnel Vashi, Pillai Panvel, Terna Nerul form a Tech Corridor that has matured into a credible alternative to Mumbai-island campuses.

• Better campus infrastructure: Most Navi Mumbai colleges have meaningfully larger campuses (10-25 acres) compared to Mumbai-island congested colleges.
• Proximity to IT Parks: Mahape, Airoli and Belapur IT corridors host TCS, Wipro, Infosys, Capgemini and Reliance Jio campuses with active campus-recruiting partnerships.
• Lower cost of living. PG and apartment rents in Vashi, Nerul, Belapur and Kharghar run well below equivalent South and West Mumbai accommodation. Be aware of what that statement is: no government body publishes a city- or suburb-level cost-of-living figure — the CPI measures price change within a centre, not what one place costs against another — so any rent comparison you read, including ours, is an estimate from listings rather than a measurement. Get current quotes for the specific area before you budget.
• Navi Mumbai International Airport (NMIA) advantage: The new airport at Ulwe (operational 2025-26) is closer to Navi Mumbai colleges than CSMIA Mumbai is to Mumbai-island colleges — a meaningful internship / family-travel advantage.
• Lower MHT-CET cutoffs — the official 2026 numbers. From the CAP Round I 2026 closing percentiles (Computer Engineering, GOPEN) tabulated further down this page: Fr. C. Rodrigues Institute of Technology, Vashi 97.17; SIES Graduate School of Technology, Nerul 96.32; Bharati Vidyapeeth, Belapur 94.98; Terna Engineering College, Nerul 93.45; Datta Meghe, Airoli 93.23; A. P. Shah Institute of Technology, Thane 92.51. Across the whole Thane and Raigad belt the CSE closing percentile runs from 97.17 right down to 54.87, so “Navi Mumbai” is not one cutoff band — read the row for the specific college.

🎓 DSE — Direct Second Year Engineering for Diploma Holders

One of the most under-covered Maharashtra admission pathways — flagged by the audit as a major SEO miss — is Direct Second Year Engineering (DSE). Diploma graduates can enter directly into the second year of a 4-year B.Tech programme with 10% extra seats reserved at participating colleges.

Eligibility

📌 In one line: you need 45% in your diploma, in any branch of engineering, and you do not need to be from Maharashtra to apply.

Two routes people rarely know they have. A B.Sc. degree from a UGC or AIU recognised university with 45% also qualifies, provided you passed HSC with Mathematics as a subject. So does a three-year D.Voc. in the same or an allied sector. Both carry the same 40% concession for Maharashtra reserved, EWS and PwD candidates.

On the seats: lateral entry is permitted up to 10% of sanctioned intake, over and above it — “supernumerary”, in the brochure's word — and vacant first-year seats from earlier years are filled in the same process. It is a ceiling colleges may use, not a block of seats every college is obliged to fill.

DSE Process

1. DTE / CET Cell DSE Registration: Centralised CAP-style counselling specifically for diploma-to-B.Tech lateral entry.
2. Document Verification: At designated FCs (Facilitation Centres) across Maharashtra.
3. State Merit Number: Generated based on diploma aggregate marks.
4. Option Filling: Choose colleges in preference order.
5. Allotment: Based on State Merit Number.

Top Mumbai Colleges Accepting DSE

• VJTI Mumbai — highly competitive DSE seats, top diploma percentages required.
• SPIT Andheri — competitive DSE seats; CSE / IT branches fill fastest.
• DJ Sanghvi (DJSCE) — popular DSE option for diploma students.
• Thadomal Shahani (TSEC), Pillai Panvel, Father Agnel Vashi — broader DSE access.
• Not K J Somaiya, Vidyavihar. It is outside CAP, and DSE is a CAP-system process — the CET Cell does not allot diploma holders to it.

For diploma holders, DSE is a transformative pathway — it cuts one full year off the standard B.Tech timeline (3 years instead of 4) and is a far cheaper / faster route than starting Year 1 fresh.

💰 Mumbai’s BFSI sector — what is true, and what is repeated without checking

📌 In one line: Mumbai genuinely is where India's banking and markets infrastructure sits, but the “Mumbai pays 5-15% more” claim has no source, and most of the fintech names quoted as a Mumbai advantage are in Bengaluru.

We went looking for the measurement behind the salary claim and there isn't one. NIRF publishes per-institution medians with no city aggregation and no employer-sector split. AICTE publishes no city-by-sector comparison. AISHE publishes no placement data at all. The Periodic Labour Force Survey never crosses a graduate's college city with their employer's sector. So nobody has measured whether Mumbai engineering graduates get more BFSI offers, or better-paid ones, than graduates elsewhere — and we are not going to be the first to assert it.

What is true is worth knowing on its own terms:

• Banks headquartered in Mumbai: SBI, HDFC Bank, Kotak Mahindra Bank and Yes Bank. Three names usually added to that list do not belong on it — ICICI Bank's registered office is in Vadodara, Axis Bank's is in Ahmedabad (Mumbai is its corporate office), and IndusInd Bank's is in Pune. All three run large Mumbai operations; none is headquartered here.
• Stock exchanges and market infrastructure: NSE, BSE, MCX, NPCI and ClearCorp are in Mumbai, and this is the part that is genuinely hard to replicate elsewhere — trading-system, low-latency and market-data engineering work sits where the exchanges sit.
• Global investment banks — Morgan Stanley, JP Morgan, Goldman Sachs, Deutsche Bank and Barclays — run large technology centres in Mumbai and BKC, and appear on Mumbai colleges' own published recruiter lists.
• The fintech list, checked. Razorpay, PhonePe, Zerodha and Groww are all headquartered in Bengaluru; Paytm's registered office is in New Delhi with its corporate office in Noida, and Mumbai appears on its own contact page only under “other office locations”. CRED's own site gave us no verifiable address at all. Five of the six are not in Mumbai. If a page offers that list as a reason to study in Mumbai, it has not checked it — and neither had we, until this audit.
• So what should you actually take from this? Choose Mumbai for the exchanges, the bank technology centres and the internships you can physically get to during term. Do not choose it on a salary premium nobody publishes.

Mumbai — The FinTech, Consulting & Core Engineering Powerhouse

Mumbai, the financial capital of India, is a powerhouse for FinTech, Consulting, and Core Engineering. For the 2026 batch, studying in Mumbai means unparalleled access to the headquarters of massive conglomerates (Reliance, Tata, L&T) and top global financial firms (Morgan Stanley, JP Morgan, Deutsche Bank). The Bandra-Kurla Complex (BKC), Andheri IT corridor, and Navi Mumbai's Mahape belt create a tri-city campus for engineering students.

Admission Pathways in Mumbai 2026

College Spotlights: Verified 2026 Data

1. Veermata Jijabai Technological Institute (VJTI)

The crown jewel of Mumbai engineering — a government-aided autonomous institute with a 130+ year legacy. Admission: Through MHT-CET CAP only. Read this next line carefully if you are a JEE Main candidate: VJTI has no All India seats at all — the 2026-27 seat matrix shows All India = 0 on every one of its nine branches, because government and government-aided autonomous institutions are 100% Maharashtra State Level. A JEE Main score does not open a CAP route into VJTI. No Management / ILS Quota either — VJTI is government-aided, and its institute-level seats are zero. 2025 Cutoff (official): Computer Engineering closed at 99.94 percentile in MHT-CET CAP Round 1 (GOPEN; source: cetcell.mahacet.org), correcting the widely misquoted 98 percentile floor. Placements: VJTI publishes no institute-wide average. Its NIRF median for the AY 2024-25 batch is ₹11,20,000, with 562 of 674 placed. Its own placement report gives branch averages for AY 2025-26 — Computer ₹19.74 LPA, IT ₹14.62 LPA — and marks them provisional, because placement for unplaced students was still running when it was published.

2. Sardar Patel Institute of Technology (SPIT)

An autonomous elite college in Andheri (West), known for producing top-tier software engineers and entrepreneurs. As an autonomous institution, SPIT designs its own curriculum and exams — a major selling point for industry-aligned CSE / AI / FinTech tracks. Admission: MHT-CET CAP for state seats; JEE Main for 15% AIQ; and 20% institute-level seats — 48 of the 240 Computer Engineering seats in 2026-27. Those are filled on the state's own merit order after the CAP rounds, not on a list SPIT composes. Placements: SPIT publishes one figure and it is a median: ₹13,66,000 for the AY 2024-25 batch, with 339 of 450 placed. It publishes no average, no highest package and nothing branch-wise. Its median is the highest of any college on this page and the only one that has risen three years running.

3. Dwarkadas J. Sanghvi College of Engineering (DJSCE)

Located in Vile Parle, DJSCE is highly favoured by top corporate recruiters, offering exceptional infrastructure and a powerful BKC corridor connect. 2026 Fees: FRA-approved total ₹2,28,500 a year (tuition ₹1,98,696 + development ₹29,804). Management Quota (ILS): DJSCE fills its 20% ILS quota on merit among ILS applicants — a localised process. FindUrCollege provides expert tracking of these merit form submission windows and ILS deadlines. Placements: DJSCE's two own documents disagree — NIRF median ₹7,00,000 (565 of 863 placed), its own placement report median ₹10.34 LPA and average ₹11.28 LPA (503 of 523 applicants placed). Both are set out above. It publishes no branch-wise salary of any kind.

4. K J Somaiya School of Engineering (KJSSE), Vidyavihar

The institution now calls itself K J Somaiya School of Engineering — its own 2026-27 brochure, its file host and its enquiry form all use that name, and "College of Engineering" survives only as legacy usage. It is a constituent college of Somaiya Vidyavihar University, a state private university, on a 50-acre campus (the "65" that circulates is the 65th NIRF rank printed beside it on the same brochure page, not an acreage).

It is not in Maharashtra CAP. "Somaiya" appears nowhere in the 2,307-page 2026-27 CAP seat matrix, because state private universities are outside the 2015 Act. Official source: State CET Cell, Seat Matrix for CAP Round-I 2026-27, read with NIRF India Rankings 2025, which does not rank this school anywhere in the Engineering top 300. Three consequences follow, and they contradict what most pages say about this college: it has no 20% institutional quota (ILS is a CAP category), it takes no diploma holders through the state DSE process, and no CAP closing percentile exists for it — the CET Cell does not admit to it. Its fee is set by the university, not approved by the Fees Regulating Authority.

Admission: its own brochure's Selection Process reads "Valid score of JEE Main 2026 OR MHT-CET 2026 OR SAT 2025/2026 OR CUET 2026 OR PERA CET 2026" — five accepted exams, one of which is required. Twelfth marks alone are not a route in. Eligibility is Std XII from any board with English, Physics and Mathematics compulsory plus one of chemistry, biotechnology, biology or technical vocational, minimum 45%. Application fee ₹2,000, four rounds, Round 1 opening 20 January 2026 at admission.somaiya.edu.

Fees, first year, from its own brochure: ₹5,67,000 total for Computer Engineering, AI & Data Science, IT and Computer Science & Business Systems (tuition ₹4,80,000 + development ₹72,000 + exam ₹4,000 + other ₹11,000); ₹5,20,000 for Computer & Communication, Electronics & Computer, E&TC, Mechanical, Robotics & AI, Electronics (VLSI) and Civil. NRI and international: ₹7,07,000 and ₹6,50,000. Two things the brochure says that a quoted "₹4-5 lakh" hides: hostel is separate at ₹2,85,651 a year triple-sharing non-AC or ₹4,12,499 double-sharing, plus ₹60,000 mess for ten months; and "The Programme Fees and Residential Fees are subject to an annual increase of up to 8%" — so year four is not year one.

Placements: it publishes both, on its own Placements page, for AY 2024-25: highest ₹51.72 lakh, average ₹8.63 lakh, median ₹7.5 lakh, 146 companies, 360 students selected. It gives no class size, so no placement percentage can be worked out from it. Its average has fallen from ₹9.55 lakh the year before.

One name to be careful with: K J Somaiya Institute of Technology, Sion, CAP code 03209, is a different institution and it is in CAP. If anyone quotes you a "KJ Somaiya cutoff", ask which of the two, and ask for the CAP code.

5. Thadomal Shahani Engineering College (TSEC)

Located in Bandra, TSEC is known for excellent placements in the IT and banking sectors, benefiting from the BKC proximity. Top Branches: Artificial Intelligence & Data Science, CSE. Fees: Approx ₹1.90 L per year. Average placement: ₹8.50 LPA. TSEC's management quota seats are limited and in high demand — early contact recommended.

Searching for the top 10, top 20 or even top 50 engineering colleges in Mumbai? Every credible ranking starts with the names in this verified grid. Fees are regulated by the Fees Regulating Authority (FRA) of Maharashtra (mahafra.org) and subject to official notifications. How to read the salary column

📌 In one line: the median is the honest number, and it is lower than the averages you will see quoted everywhere else.

NIRF makes every college report the same thing in the same way: the median salary of the graduates it placed, and how many of the students who finished on time were placed. That is why this page uses it. An "average" quoted on an aggregator is usually computed over a self-selected group, and one very large offer moves it a long way. A median cannot be moved like that.

Two things to notice before you compare colleges on this column. First, the number of students matters as much as the salary: TCET placed 496 students against a graduating class of 968, while Fr. CRCE placed 149 of 320 — similar medians, very different odds. Second, four of these medians are falling year on year — DJ Sanghvi ₹8.40L → ₹7.80L → ₹7.00L, VESIT ₹6.00L → ₹5.50L → ₹4.50L, Fr. CRCE ₹6.00L → ₹5.40L → ₹4.50L, K J Somaiya's average ₹9.43L → ₹9.55L → ₹8.63L. Only SPIT's is rising: ₹12.00L → ₹13.00L → ₹13.66L. A single year's figure will not show you that.

Nothing in this column should be multiplied, projected forward, or read as what you will earn. It is what half the placed graduates of one batch earned less than.

DJ Sanghvi publishes two different numbers for the same batch

📌 In one line: DJSCE's own two documents disagree about its own placements, and you should know that before anyone quotes you either one.

For the batch that graduated in AY 2024-25, DJ Sanghvi's NIRF submission reports a median of ₹7,00,000, with 565 of 863 placed and 197 going to higher study. Its own Training & Placement report for the same batch, as on 4 August 2025, reports a median of ₹10.34 LPA and an average of ₹11.28 LPA, with 503 placed and 343 going to higher study.

The head counts differ as well as the salary, which points at the two documents counting different populations — NIRF counts everyone who graduated on time, while the placement report counts the students who registered for placement. We are not going to pick one and hide the other. If a counsellor quotes you ₹10.34 lakh, ask which document it comes from and what its denominator is.

The same distinction explains DJSCE's widely quoted "96% placement". That is 503 of 523 applicants. Measured against the graduating class it is 58.1% on the placement report's own numbers, or 65.5% on NIRF's.

Navigating ILS (Institutional Level Seats) in Mumbai

📌 In one line: an institute-level seat is decided on your MHT-CET or JEE Main score, in the state's own merit order — not on your board marks, and not at the college's discretion.

The rule is short and it has no exceptions. Institute-level admissions are made “strictly as per the Inter-Se-Merit of the candidates who have applied to the Competent Authority for verification of documents and then to the Institution”, and the same brochure defines “Inter-Se-Merit” as the order of merit declared by the CET Cell. The college does not compose that order. It receives it.

Your 12th PCM percentage does have a place, but a small one: it is the fourth tie-breaker, used only after CET Mathematics, then CET Physics, then CET Chemistry have failed to separate two candidates on identical scores.

So be careful with a claim you will certainly hear — that some colleges run an easier or “direct” institute-level route where boards matter more. There is no such category in the rules, at any college. The State CET Cell issued a public notice on 21 August 2026 asking students and parents not to believe agents, private counsellors or social-media posts that say otherwise, and to check only the CET Cell's or the college's own website.

20% is the ceiling, not a guarantee

Twenty per cent is what the rules allow a college to keep, not what every college actually keeps. A college may surrender its institutional quota to CAP, in part or in full, and the brochure gives it one window to do so — two days before the CAP Round-I seat matrix is published. After that it cannot.

Some Mumbai colleges use it. In 2026-27, VESIT Chembur surrendered its entire institutional quota: all six of its branches show zero institute-level seats, so every VESIT seat this year went through CAP. Bharati Vidyapeeth Navi Mumbai kept the full 20% on four branches but only 15% on Mechanical and 10% on Instrumentation. VJTI and ICT Mumbai have no institutional quota on any branch at all.

The honest instruction, then: before you plan around an institute-level seat at a particular college and branch, open the CAP Round-I seat matrix for that year and read the “Institute Seats” column for that exact choice code. Anyone quoting you a blanket 20% has not checked. For reference, the 2026-27 matrix gives SPIT Andheri 48 institute seats of 240 in Computer Engineering, DJ Sanghvi 36 of 180, and Thadomal Shahani 36 of 180.

NRI seats come out of the 20%, not on top of it

The brochure's seat-allocation table names the column exactly this way: “Institutional Quota (including 5% Quota for NRI, if applicable)”. Up to five per cent may go to NRI candidates, and unfilled NRI seats go to Maharashtra-candidature candidates on merit, then All India. The CAP seats are simply what is left: sanctioned intake minus the institutional quota.

There is no “ACAP” round, and no “spot round”

“ACAP”, “against CAP” and “spot round” appear zero times in the 127-page Information Brochure for 2026-27 and zero times in the CET Cell's admission notice. They are not official Maharashtra terminology for first-year engineering, and there is no such round in the schedule. If someone uses those words to you, they are not reading from the official schedule.

What exists is one round, from 8 to 14 September 2026, in which a college fills two things together: its institutional quota, and any CAP seats left vacant after Round IV. Both are governed by Rule 13, both are filled on the state's merit order, and both end at the same 5:00 PM cut-off on 14 September.

The 2026-27 institute-level schedule

One thing people miss: you cannot walk into a college with a cheque. The notice puts it plainly — to apply for the institutional quota or a post-CAP vacant seat you must first complete registration and document verification at a Scrutiny Centre, and only then apply to colleges or fill the Institute Level Option Form. Verification comes first, always.

Read that as a ceiling, not a price — a college may charge anything from the plain approved fee up to three times it, and never more.

Mumbai Engineering — What each college actually publishes about placements

📌 In one line: only two of these colleges publish a branch-level salary at all, so a "CSE average package" table for Mumbai cannot be built from official documents — and the one that used to sit here was not.

This is worth saying plainly, because a branch-wise salary table is the single most-copied thing on Mumbai engineering pages and almost none of it is sourced. Here is what each college genuinely puts in writing.

One thing to check whenever you are shown a Mumbai placement table

Sardar Patel Institute of Technology is SPIT — one institute, NIRF id IR-E-C-33773, listed by the CET Cell as "Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan's Sardar Patel Institute Of Technology", DTE code EN3215. A table that lists "SPIT" in one row and "Sardar Patel" in another is describing the same college twice, and the two rows will not agree. If you see that, the table was assembled rather than sourced.

Read this before you choose a branch on salary

The spread inside one college is larger than the gap between colleges. VJTI's branch averages run from ₹4.00 LPA in Textile to ₹19.74 LPA in Computer — a five-fold difference inside the same institute, on the same campus, in the same year. Anyone quoting you "the VJTI package" has picked one end of that.

And the AI-pays-more claim does not survive the one official test available. You will read everywhere that AI & Data Science pays 5-15% more than CSE. At Fr. CRCE, the only Mumbai college publishing both, the median for AI & Data Science is ₹4.5 lakh against Computer Engineering's ₹5.5 lakh — AI&DS is 18% lower. It wins only on the single highest offer (₹22 LPA against ₹16 LPA), which is one student. Choose the branch because you want to do the work, not because of a salary claim nobody publishes.

The other branches, honestly: Electronics & Communication hiring in Mumbai is thin, and most graduates move to Bangalore for semiconductor roles. Mechanical is similar, with Pune and Chennai taking most of the hiring. Chemical Engineering is the one branch where Mumbai's own industry — Reliance, BPCL, ONGC, HPCL — is the main employer rather than an outpost. Civil is supported by the Metro and Coastal Road projects. None of those four colleges publish branch salary, so we are not going to put a number beside any of them.

Mumbai Engineering — Insider Tips for 2026 Aspirants

Tip 1: Maharashtra domicile is critical for Mumbai engineering. 85% of seats at top colleges (VJTI) are state quota. Get domicile certificate by January 2026. Process takes 15-30 days at Tehsildar.

Tip 2: Apply to minority quota colleges if eligible. Sindhi minority candidates can target Thadomal Shahani at 5-10 percentile lower cutoffs. Christian minority candidates can target Don Bosco. Verify minority status with college before applying.

In one line: annual fees across the Mumbai belt run from ₹58,500 to ₹2,28,500, and the cheapest college on this list is not the one with the lowest cutoff — so sort by what you can pay, then check whether your percentile reaches it.

These are the Fees Regulating Authority’s approved annual fees for 2026-27 and the State CET Cell’s CAP Round I 2026 closing percentiles for Computer Engineering, for every FRA-listed engineering college in Mumbai City, Mumbai Suburban, Thane and Raigad. The table is ordered by fee, cheapest first.

Four things this table will tell you that a ranked list will not. First, fee and cutoff are only loosely related: Thakur Shyamnarayan closes at 94.54 on a ₹91,500 fee, while colleges charging more close lower. Second, the seat type matters — most Mumbai colleges allot on Home University seats, and a Home University percentile is not comparable with a State Level one, so the column says which each figure is. Third, the FRA approves one fee per institute for the whole engineering stream, so Computer Engineering and Civil cost the same at the same college; the branch does not change the price. Fourth, “no upward revision” means the institute did not ask for an increase and last year’s approved figure continues.

A closing percentile is not an entry requirement. It is where the last General-Open seat went in Round I, and Round I closes tightest — later rounds go lower. A percentile a little under a college’s number here is not out of reach.

The 2024 and 2025 columns are official MHT-CET CAP Round 1 closing percentiles (General/Open, GOPEN) for the CSE / Computer Engineering branch, from cetcell.mahacet.org. The 2026 column previously carried our own projections; they have been removed. A projected cutoff is a guess dressed as data, and a candidate who plans around one plans around nothing — read the actual 2026 CAP Round-I closing list on cetcell.mahacet.org instead. NMIMS MPSTME and K J Somaiya, Vidyavihar are both outside CAP, so no CAP closing percentile exists for either of them in any year.

Reservation category cutoffs are 5-15 percentile lower at all colleges. SC: typically 8-12 percentile lower. ST: 10-15 percentile lower. OBC-NCL: 3-5 percentile lower. EWS: similar to General. Sindhi minority at Thadomal: 5-10 percentile lower. Christian minority at Don Bosco: 5-10 percentile lower.

Mumbai Engineering Application Tips for International & NRI Candidates

NRI candidates and international applicants have specific Mumbai engineering pathways with distinct documentation and timeline requirements.

NRI Quota Eligibility: Student or first-degree relative (parent, sibling, paternal uncle/aunt) must hold valid NRI status with foreign work visa. Documentation: foreign passport, work permit, residence proof abroad (last 1+ year), sponsorship affidavit, NRI relationship documentation.

Where the NRI route exists. Inside CAP, NRI seats sit within the institutional quota — up to 5% of the 20% — at private unaided colleges such as DJ Sanghvi, and the FRA caps an NRI seat fee at five times the regular approved fee. K J Somaiya, being outside CAP, runs its own NRI category with its own published fee. NMIMS states it has no management quota at all, and publishes no NRI fee for MPSTME B.Tech. Apply early, but apply to the route that actually exists at that college.

NRI fees, from the colleges' own documents. K J Somaiya publishes its NRI and international first-year fee in rupees, not dollars: ₹7,07,000 or ₹6,50,000 depending on branch — roughly USD 8,000, well below the USD 15,000-20,000 figure that circulates for it. For NMIMS MPSTME we could find no published NRI fee and no NRI quota for B.Tech in either its 2026-27 entrance document or its vacant-seat handout; the word NRI does not appear in them. Ask the institution in writing for the current figure and do not accept a dollar range from a third party.

NRI funding: Credila and Avanse both lend to NRI families, and Indian banks lend against an NRI guarantor. One correction to something repeated widely: foreign-source income used for fees is not outside exchange controls. Inward remittance and payment for education are governed by FEMA and the RBI's Liberalised Remittance Scheme. There is a framework, it is straightforward to comply with, and a page telling you none applies is not a page to plan a transfer from.

Mumbai B.Tech — Education Loan Options 2026

A B.Tech in Mumbai costs ₹6.5–30 Lakhs (4 years total, depending on government / autonomous / private college). Multiple loan options can help manage this investment.

📌 In one line: the collateral-free amount depends on which college you get into, and for most Mumbai engineering colleges it is far below the ₹40 lakh figure that gets quoted.

What is fixed by regulation. Banks must not take collateral on an education loan up to ₹4 lakh — that is an RBI mandate, not a bank's policy. Repayment runs to 15 years. The moratorium is course period plus one year, not plus six months: the six-month figure people quote is SBI's early trigger, which starts your EMIs six months after you get a job if that comes first. Getting this wrong shortens the runway you plan for by half a year.

What is not fixed, and cannot be quoted. There is no 2026 interest-rate band to give you. The RBI deregulated education-loan rates: “The interest rates are determined by banks with the approval of their respective Board of Directors.” Any page printing a single range is inventing it, and the rate will differ between a secured and an unsecured loan at the same bank on the same day.

The part that actually decides your loan: which list your college is on. SBI's Scholar Loan Scheme grades institutions into tiers with different unsecured ceilings — List AA ₹50 lakh, List A ₹40 lakh, List B ₹30 lakh, List C ₹7.5 lakh. On SBI's published list, the Mumbai entries that matter for engineering are IIT Bombay (List AA), ICT Mumbai (List B), VJTI (List B) and Mumbai University (List B). SPIT, DJ Sanghvi, Thadomal Shahani, K J Somaiya's engineering school and MPSTME are not on the list at all — for those, SBI's ordinary Student Loan Scheme applies, where tangible collateral is the default above ₹7.5 lakh. No Mumbai engineering college sits in the ₹40 lakh tier.

And two of the five lenders usually named together are not banks. Credila (formerly HDFC Credila) and Avanse are NBFCs. The RBI's Model Education Loan Scheme applies to scheduled commercial banks only — explicitly not to NBFCs — so the ₹4 lakh collateral mandate and the moratorium and tenure norms above do not bind them. That is not a reason to avoid them; it is a reason to read their terms separately instead of assuming the bank rules carry over.

A worked example. ₹20 lakh at 10% over ten years is about ₹26,400 a month. But note what the IBA scheme says happens first: “The accrued interest during the repayment holiday period to be added to the principal.” You do not repay ₹20 lakh — you repay ₹20 lakh plus five years of accrued interest on it.

If you are taking an institute-level seat, the loan is available — the IBA scheme says a student who qualifies on merit may borrow even for a management-quota seat. But it also says how much: “fees as approved by the State Government/Government approved regulatory body for payment seats will be taken”. The loan is sized to the regulated fee, not to whatever the college charges you.

PM-Vidyalaxmi — and whether your college qualifies. First, a correction you will not find on most pages: PM-Vidyalaxmi is an application portal, not a subsidy. The subsidy is a separate scheme applied for through it. Second, and this is the part that changes the answer: the scheme covers only “Quality Higher Education Institutions” — those ranked in the NIRF top 100, state HEIs ranked 101-200, and central government institutions. Of the Mumbai institutions on this page, ICT Mumbai is on the list. VJTI is not. Neither are SPIT, DJ Sanghvi, Thadomal Shahani or K J Somaiya's engineering school. What the scheme gives, where it applies: a 75% government credit guarantee on loans up to ₹7.5 lakh, and for families earning up to ₹8 lakh a year, a 3% interest subvention on a loan up to ₹10 lakh — capped at one lakh students nationally, and not available if you already receive another government scholarship or subvention. Separately, under PM-USP CSIS, families earning up to ₹4.5 lakh get full interest subvention during the moratorium, on a loan up to ₹10 lakh, for technical or professional courses at approved institutions. Note that ₹10 lakh ceiling against the fees on this page: at ₹5.67 lakh a year you would exhaust it in the second year.

Maharashtra's fee scholarship — and the condition that disqualifies most institute-level students. The scheme is the Rajarshi Chhatrapati Shahu Maharaj Education Fee Scholarship, for families earning up to ₹8 lakh. It is not a flat award: for a professional course it pays 50% of the academic and examination fee for male students and 100% for female students — DTE's own line is that from AY 2024-25, girls receive the full education and examination fee. Because it is a percentage, it is worth far more than the small flat figures usually quoted: at a ₹4.4 lakh-a-year college a male student's benefit is around ₹2.2 lakh.

Now the condition. The scheme document states: “Candidate should be admitted through Centralized Admission Process (CAP) [Not applicable for students admitted in Institutional quota or Institute level round].” If you take an institute-level seat, you lose this. That trade-off belongs in your arithmetic before you choose the route, not after.

SC/ST support comes through the Post Matric Scholarship Scheme, which covers the compulsory non-refundable fees of the course plus a maintenance allowance, for families earning up to ₹2.5 lakh a year. It tracks your actual fee rather than paying a fixed sum. The Maharashtra state portal moved during this audit and its scheme pages were returning errors, so check MahaDBT directly for the current state-level position.

NRI Loans: HDFC Credila NRI, Avanse Foreign Education for NRI candidates. Loan in INR or USD. Foreign source income usable for fee payment.

College-specific Scholarships: NMIMS MPSTME merit scholarships for top NPAT scorers (25-100% tuition). KJ Somaiya offers institutional scholarships. Don Bosco offers Christian minority fee waivers. Thadomal Shahani offers Sindhi minority scholarships.

On timing: no bank or regulator publishes a processing window, so we are not going to give you one — SBI advertises the opposite, quick sanction at its designated campus branches. What is worth planning for is the gap at the start: most loans disburse term-wise after the college confirms your fee receipt, so keep ₹2-3 lakh liquid for the deposit, advance rent and setting up, and start the application as soon as you have an allotment rather than waiting for the fee deadline.
