How to Apply — Step-by-Step Admission Process
Admission to IIT Delhi B.Tech is exclusively through JEE Advanced via the Joint Seat Allocation Authority (JoSAA) centralised counselling process. There is NO management quota, NO NRI quota, and NO direct admission at IITs. Status (11 July 2026): JoSAA 2026 counselling is underway — the Round 4 seat allotment result is out on josaa.nic.in. The full process timeline for the cycle:
- Step 1 — Qualify JEE Main: Take JEE Main Session 1 (January) and/or Session 2 (April). Top 2.5 lakh JEE Main scorers across all categories qualify for JEE Advanced.
- Step 2 — JEE Advanced Registration: Register on jeeadv.ac.in (typically late April-early May 2026). Registration fee: Rs 3,200 General/OBC/EWS; Rs 1,600 SC/ST/PwD/Female.
- Step 3 — JEE Advanced Exam: May 17, 2026 (confirmed by IIT Roorkee for 2026). Two papers, 3 hours each, computer-based.
- Step 4 — Results Declaration: JEE Advanced 2026 results were declared in June 2026. Final AIR/CRL list published.
- Step 5 — JoSAA Registration: Register on josaa.nic.in in early June 2026. Fill choice list of 80+ institute-branch combinations ranked by preference.
- Step 6 — JoSAA Allotment Rounds: 6 rounds of seat allotment over 3-4 weeks. Each round, accept (FREEZE) / float / withdraw your allotted seat. IIT Delhi allotments happen if your AIR matches the cutoff for any branch you listed above your current allotment.
- Step 7 — Document Verification: Physically report to IIT Delhi or any reporting centre for original document verification. Required: JEE Main scorecard, JEE Advanced scorecard, Class 10/12 marksheets, birth certificate, category certificate (if applicable), income certificate (for fee waiver), Aadhaar, passport-size photos, medical certificate.
- Step 8 — Fee Payment: Pay first-semester institute fees online — Rs 1,31,000 with institute residence for Gen/OBC/EWS (Rs 25,000 already adjusted from the JoSAA seat-acceptance payment, so Rs 1,06,000 balance) and Rs 31,000 total for SC/ST/PwD, per the official 2025-entry circular — by the institute deadline.
- Step 9 — Institute Joining: Report to IIT Delhi for joining formalities in late July/early August 2026. Orientation week, hostel allotment, branch confirmation.
Key tips for JoSAA strategy when targeting IIT Delhi:
- Add ALL IIT Delhi branches as choices (even branches you don't prefer) — better to upgrade in subsequent rounds than miss out entirely.
- If your AIR is borderline for CSE Delhi, also add CSE at IIT Bombay, IIT Madras, IIT Kanpur, IIT Kharagpur, IIT Roorkee, IIT Guwahati, IIT Hyderabad — your geographic preference is secondary to branch quality at top IITs.
- For NIRF Top 10 IIT focus, AIR 1-2,000 General is realistic — Top 10 + selected NITs (Trichy/Surathkal/Warangal) covers most preferences.
- Track Round-by-Round opening/closing ranks on JoSAA website — historical data is available at josaa.nic.in/openings-closing-ranks.

Application Roadmap — From Class 11 to IIT Delhi
Realistic preparation timeline for IIT Delhi B.Tech admission:
- Class 10 → Class 11 transition (April-June): Choose Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics in Class 11. Identify a coaching institute or self-study plan. Target NCERT Class 11 books for foundational concepts.
- Class 11 Year (June-March): Build foundational concepts. Focus on NCERT first, then reference books (HC Verma for Physics, NCERT + Cengage for Chemistry, RD Sharma + Cengage for Mathematics). Take 2-3 monthly tests + 10-12 chapter tests per subject.
- Class 11 Summer Break (April-May): Revise Class 11 syllabus. Start Class 12 chapters in advance. Take 2-3 full-syllabus mock tests for JEE Main format.
- Class 12 Year (June-Feb): Class 12 syllabus + JEE Main + JEE Advanced preparation in parallel. Target 30-50 full mock tests. Focus on accuracy > speed in Class 12 board prep (Class 12 marks DO matter for IIT eligibility — minimum 75% aggregate or top 20 percentile).
- JEE Main Session 1 (January): Take JEE Main session 1 (focus on accuracy). Score should clear 95+ percentile to comfortably qualify for JEE Advanced.
- JEE Main Session 2 (April): Take session 2 if needed to improve score (NTA considers best of both). Top 2.5 lakh in JEE Main qualify for JEE Advanced.
- JEE Advanced (May 17, 2026): Final exam — both papers in single day, 3 hours each.
- Results & Counselling (June 2026): JEE Advanced results June 1. JoSAA registration mid-June. Allotment rounds late-June through July.
- Joining (August 2026): Report to IIT Delhi if allotted.
For students currently in Class 11: focus on building strong fundamentals in PCM. Avoid jumping to advanced JEE Advanced problems too early — solidify NCERT and Class 11/12 syllabus first. Class 12 board exam marks need 75%+ aggregate OR top 20 percentile of their board (eligibility criteria, no waiver).
For students currently in Class 12: prioritise board exams + JEE Main + JEE Advanced together. Mock test routine: take 1-2 full JEE-format mock tests per week from January onwards. Track sectional scores, identify weak chapters, and revisit through targeted practice. Sleep, exercise, and mental health matter — don't skip these for "extra prep hours."
For drop-year students: the year between Class 12 and JEE Advanced re-attempt should be 75% exam prep, 25% mental wellness. Don't isolate completely from peers. Set clear daily/weekly targets and stick to a fixed schedule (e.g., 6 AM-10 PM with breaks).
