College Compare Guide — 2026
Pune's top engineering colleges — PICT (top private) and COEP (top government). Both are tier-1 engineering destinations. Below: head-to-head comparison of cutoffs, fees, placements.
📌 In one line: side-by-side comparison — cutoffs, fees & outcomes.
| Parameter | PICT Pune | COEP Pune |
|---|---|---|
| Full name | Pune Institute of Computer Technology | COEP Technological University |
| Type | Private autonomous engineering institute affiliated to SPPU | Government unitary public university |
| Established | 1983 | 1854 legacy; university status from 2022 |
| Admission route | MHT-CET/JEE Main through Maharashtra CAP plus Institutional Level seats | MHT-CET/JEE Main through Maharashtra CAP only; no management quota |
| 2025 CSE/CE cutoff | Computer Engineering 99.71 percentile (CAP R1 Open) | Computer Science 99.90 percentile (CAP R1 Open) |
| Institutional / management quota | Yes, 20% Institutional Level; CE closed at 99.2156179 in 2025 | No direct admission and no management quota |
| 4-year B.Tech fee signal | Open/CAP ₹4.92L total; ILS ₹8L total | About ₹6L total from 2025-26 first-year fee of ₹1,56,464 |
| CSE/CE average package | Official PICT T&P 2023-24: CE avg ₹14.5 LPA; overall avg ₹12.5 LPA | Reported CSE around ₹17.31 LPA; verify exact average/median with COEP placement disclosure |
| Highest package | Official PICT T&P 2023-24: ₹42 LPA | Reported ₹52.57 LPA (2024-25); verify with COEP placement disclosure |
| Best fit | Focused CS/IT peer group, coding culture, Pune tech ecosystem | Government brand, broader branches, stronger top-end CSE placement signal |
COEP Pune CSE has the stronger government brand and top-end placement signal, but its official 2025-26 first-year B.Tech fee is about ₹1,56,464, which works out to roughly ₹6L over four years before concessions. PICT Pune CE is Rs 1,23,000 per year through Open/CAP seats, roughly Rs 4.92L over four years before extras, while Institutional Level seats are Rs 2,00,000 per year.
✅ Sourcing: cutoffs per official CET Cell CAP records; fees per FRA/institute circulars — verify the current round on mahacet.org before decisions.
The cleaner conclusion is not "COEP is cheaper in every case." The better conclusion is: COEP wins on government brand and CSE placement edge; PICT wins as a focused private/autonomous CS-IT option with excellent fee-to-package value.
COEP Computer Science closed around 99.90 percentile in MHT-CET CAP 2025 Round 1 Open category. PICT Computer Engineering closed at 99.71, with IT at 99.55 and AI & Data Science at 99.61. PICT Institutional Level seats were also high: CE 99.2156179, AI & DS 98.9251126, IT 98.4106279, Electronics & Computer 98.5686454 and E&TC 97.5051096.
So the practical gap is small at the top. COEP is harder, but PICT is still a near-top-percentile target. Students in the 90-95 percentile band should build backup lists around VIT Pune, PCCOE, AISSMS, DYP, JSPM and other Pune options rather than treating PICT CSE as realistic.
COEP CSE 2024-25 placement numbers are reported as higher at the top end, including a commonly cited ₹52.57 LPA highest figure. PICT official T&P 2023-24 lists ₹14.5 LPA Computer Engineering average, ₹12.5 LPA overall average, ₹42 LPA highest, 93.15% placement and 150+ companies. Verify COEP averages, medians and placed counts from COEP's official placement disclosure before using package numbers in the final decision.
COEP has the top-end edge. PICT remains extremely competitive for product-company preparation, competitive programming culture and Pune software hiring.
Pick COEP Pune if you can secure CSE/AI or a branch you genuinely want, value government university brand, and want the strongest top-end placement signal. Pick PICT Pune if your goal is Computer Engineering, IT or AI & Data Science and you narrowly miss COEP, or if you prefer a focused CS/IT environment over a broader government campus.
Branch matters. PICT CE/IT can be smarter than a COEP branch you do not want. COEP CSE/AI is usually stronger than PICT when both are available to the same student.
COEP has no management quota. Its B.Tech seats are filled through merit-based MHT-CET and JEE Main routes processed via Maharashtra CAP. Any claim of paid direct admission to COEP should be treated as a red flag.
PICT has Institutional Level seats, but they are still competitive. The 2025 PICT Institutional Level closing scores were 99.2156179 for Computer Engineering, 98.9251126 for AI & Data Science, 98.4106279 for IT, 98.5686454 for Electronics & Computer Engineering and 97.5051096 for E&TC. Do not describe this route as a low-score interview route.
| Your likely score band | Best strategy |
|---|---|
| 99.90+ percentile | Target COEP CSE/AI first, with PICT CE/IT as backup. |
| 99.60-99.89 percentile | Keep COEP non-CS options and PICT CE/AI/IT active; decide by branch preference. |
| 98.40-99.59 percentile | PICT Institutional Level or later-round branches may be possible; keep VIT Pune and PCCOE backups. |
| Below 98.40 percentile | Build a wider Pune list; PICT CE/IT is unlikely unless category or round dynamics help. |
If you are 100% focused on software, a strong CS/IT branch often matters more than a broader college brand. PICT CE/IT/AI can beat a non-preferred core branch for students targeting product roles. If you get COEP CSE or AI, COEP usually has the stronger overall signal.
We compare your exact MHT-CET/JEE score, category, domicile, budget and branch preference against both pages: the PICT Pune cutoff and fee guide and the COEP Pune admission guide. For most students, the right answer is not "PICT or COEP" in isolation; it is the best branch-seat combination you can actually secure in CAP and Institutional Level rounds.
