XAT (Xavier Aptitude Test) is conducted by XLRI in January each year. It is accepted by 160+ institutes including XLRI, XIMB, IMI, GIM, TAPMI and many others. XAT has a unique section — Decision Making — not found in CAT, making it a distinct test requiring special preparation.
XLRI's 2-year PGDM programme is structured around 6 terms (3 per year). Terms 1-3 cover mandatory core courses: Managerial Accounting, Microeconomics, Business Statistics, Organisational Behaviour, Marketing Management, Financial Management, and Operations Research. Terms 4-6 are elective-heavy with specialisation tracks in Marketing, Finance, Human Resources, Operations and International Business.
XLRI uses a credit-system where students must complete 180+ credits across 2 years. XAT is distinctly different from CAT. The Decision Making (DM) section — unique to XAT — tests ethical reasoning and business judgment through case-based scenarios. DM cannot be cracked by formulae — it requires extensive practice with XAT previous year papers and developing a sense of ethical decision-making frameworks. Spend 30-40% of your XAT prep time exclusively on Decision Making. The Verbal Ability section in XAT is harder than CAT — with RC passages that are more literary and abstract.
