What GMAT score do you need for top Indian B-schools?

  • 760+ (very high): Strengthens scholarships everywhere — ISB, IIM 1-year programmes, SPJIMR, MDI.
  • 700–740: Competitive for ISB and the IIM one-year / executive programmes (IIM-A PGPX, IIM-B EPGP, IIM-C MBAEx).
  • 650–700: Strong for SPJIMR, MDI, IMT, IMI, Great Lakes, TAPMI, XIMB, BITSoM, NMIMS and most top private B-schools.
  • 600–650: Opens many good GMAT-accepting B-schools and international/NRI seats.

Scores are indicative — work experience, academics, essays and interviews matter alongside the GMAT. Our counsellors map your score and profile to a realistic shortlist for free.

GMAT vs CAT — which route is right for you?

Choose GMAT if you want a one-year or executive MBA, are targeting ISB, are a working professional or NRI, or want a score you can also use for B-schools abroad (valid 5 years, can be taken year-round). Choose CAT if your target is the IIM flagship two-year PGP or government B-schools that admit only through CAT. Many candidates sit both to keep every door open — the GMAT simply widens the set of B-schools you can apply to.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many colleges in India accept the GMAT?
More than 190 Indian business schools and universities accept GMAT scores (out of 2,400+ institutions and 7,700+ programmes worldwide). The list includes all the IIMs, ISB, XLRI, SPJIMR, FMS Delhi, MDI, IIFT, NMIMS, MICA, IRMA, Great Lakes, SDA Bocconi and many more.
Do the IIMs accept GMAT scores?
Yes. Every IIM is an official GMAT score recipient. The flagship two-year PGP/MBA is admitted mainly through CAT, but the IIMs accept GMAT for their one-year, executive and international programmes (such as IIM-A PGPX, IIM-B EPGP, IIM-C MBAEx and IIM-L IPMX), and for many international and PhD/FPM applicants.
What GMAT score do I need for top Indian B-schools?
As a guide: ISB typically looks for 700-720+, top IIM one-year programmes around 700+, and strong B-schools like SPJIMR, MDI, IMT, IMI and Great Lakes generally accept 650-700. Many good GMAT-accepting B-schools admit with 600+. A higher score plus solid work experience strengthens scholarships and shortlists.
Is GMAT better than CAT for an MBA in India?
GMAT is the better route if you are targeting one-year MBAs, executive MBAs, ISB, or international/NRI programmes, or if you want a score valid for 5 years and usable abroad. CAT is required for the IIM flagship two-year PGP and most government B-schools. Many candidates take both to keep all options open.
Does FMS Delhi accept GMAT?
Yes — the University of Delhi, Faculty of Management Studies (FMS) is listed as an official GMAT score recipient. Its flagship two-year MBA is primarily CAT-based, while GMAT is used for executive and certain programmes; always confirm the accepted exam for your specific FMS programme.
